The King Is Dead, Long Live The King!

Clues are slowly gathering, and the pieces of puzzle are falling in to their place. Blizzard started sending us tips of what’s to come with the Yogg Saron fight (Visions), and with the latest  happenings on the PTR, it is a certainty that the tortured champion (from Yogg’s visions) is no other than the Great Champion of Alliance; Highlord Bolvar Fordragon.

In Yogg vision, we can hear the Lich king saying  “I will break you, like i broke him“. Who is he talking about? Logical conclusion would be that the Turned (broken) Champion is no other than Saurfang The Younger.

Sounds like it. But, what will happen to Bolvar? Will he be saved? Blizzard did a good job apparently, since there are many questions rising, and players are drooling in anticipation. There are people in the WoW community who think that Bolvar might be the new Lich King (including yours truly). As we can see on the Lich King Death Animation, when Arthas dies, his Helm falls off, and he tries to get it with the last atoms of his strength, just to get a hold of it again.

Even in the Cataclysm Trailer, the narrator says “As the terrible war against the Lich King continues, the proud defenders of Azeroth fight to secure a lasting peace

After all, the power of the Lich King lies in the Frostmourne ,  and by killing Arthas (another tip given by Yogg – “You will learn, no king rules forever, only death is eternal“), we just might open a position for someone else to stand in his place.  For those of you that played and still remember the original Diablo ,  Diablo was trapped in a Soulstone (so, who ever had the soulstone, was “Diablo” -  Frostmourne anyone?).  In the Ending Cinematic the hero pierces themselves with the soulstone, attempting to contain the Lord of Terror.

So many questions, so little answers. Who is the next Lich King? Is it Bolvar? Or even The mighty Highlord Tirion Fordring? I know I wouldn’t be THAT surprised. He might even be more logical choice then Bolvar himself, since Bolvar resisted the Lich King for so long. One can only imagine that after the tortures, the only thing Bolvar wants is to destroy the Lich King (and Frostmourne), while the wise Tirion might want a different approach? Or maybe someone else who “has” the power to contain the evil (unlikely, but…). In Blizzard universes, evils have a way to come back and / or survive the deaths of their mortal bodies (reminiscent of LoTR, don’t you think?). And then punch us in the face.  All we can do is guess, and wait in anticipation for the 3.3 patch, next expansion, and more! I don’t know about you guys and girls, but I’m really looking forward to all of this :)

If you have your own theories, and clues (hints and tips) feel free to discuss them here or in our Forums.

I have quoted Yogg in this post a few times, that i feel obliged to post a link to the audio files of the encounter. Interesting stuff for this article starts at 3:00 in the video, but feel free to listen to all of it.

The power of the lich king is not just in frostmourn its ner’zul’s soul that was trapped inside the armor.

I, Believe the power of the Lich King is far more then Arthas or Ner’Zhul.

The power of the ‘Lich King’ is derived more from the armor contained within the Frozen Throne. I would even go to say that Ner’Zhul is not the first to inhabit it, the Burning Legion had the throne and the armor within it, and yet didn’t use it themselves. Perhaps a soul was required to use the armor, so using Ner’Zhul as their servant, encasing his shattered soul in the crystal was their way of unlocking it’s powers, Ner’Zhul with whatever influences of other souls had been able to seize Arthas and force him to break the prison, freeing them both from the control of the Legion.

As with much lore in this game, I would think the Lich King can be defeated, and destroyed. But the armor will have to be sealed away, perhaps in another crystal throne of sorts.

Speculating on the origins of the armor and the crystal that encased it makes me think of Sargeras. Perhaps the prior owner of this armor was a creature Sargeras defeated before his corruption by the Eredar, Or sorry, the Nathrezim. And as the many other demons that he’d enslaved to make his armies, the sealed armor may be just one of many enchanted items hiding in his dark closet.
