In World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, we’ll be making lots of changes and additions to class talents and abilities across the board. In this preview, you’ll get an early look at some of the changes in store for the shaman class, including a rundown of some of the new spells, abilities, and talents, and an overview of how the new Mastery system will work with the different talent specs.
New Shaman Spells
Primal Strike (available at level 3): Primal Strike is a new weapon-based attack that every shaman will learn very early in the game. Our goal with this ability is to make leveling as Enhancement rather than as Elemental more viable, since many key Enhancement talents become available at fairly high levels.
Healing Wave (level 4): While the shaman already has an ability called Healing Wave, we’re adding another spell to the class’s direct-healing arsenal and giving it a familiar name. The current Healing Wave will be renamed Greater Healing Wave, and the intent is for the ‘new” Healing Wave to be the shaman’s go-to heal. Lesser Healing Wave and Greater Healing Wave will be used on a more situational basis.
Unleash Weapon (level 81): Unleashes the power of your weapon enchants for additional effects (see below). A dual-wielding Enhancement shaman will activate the effects of both of their weapon enchants. Instant cast. 30-yard range. 15-second cooldown. Undispellable.
Here are a few examples of effects we’re considering for this ability:
- Windfury Weapon – Hurls a spectral version of your weapon at a target, dealing 50% weapon damage and increasing the shaman’s Haste for the next five swings.
- Flametongue Weapon – Deals instant Fire damage and buffs the shaman’s next Fire attack by 20%.
- Earthliving Weapon – Heals the target slightly and buffs the shaman’s next healing spell by 20%.
Healing Rain (level 83): An area-effect heal-over-time (HoT) spell that calls down rain in a selected area, healing all players within it. There is no limit to the number of players who can potentially be affected; however, there are diminishing returns when healing a large number of targets, much like the diminishing returns associated with AoE damage spells. This should give Restoration shaman another healing tool that improves their group-healing and heal-over-time capabilities. 2-second cast time. 30-yard range. 10-second duration. 10-second cooldown.
Spiritwalker’s Grace (level 85): When this self-targeted buff is active, your spells are no longer interrupted by movement and possibly even by your own attacks. This will give shaman of all three specs another way to heal or do damage when it’s necessary to move in both PvE and PvP. Instant cast. 10-second duration. 2-minute cooldown.
Changes to Abilities and Mechanics
In addition to adding new spells, we’re planning to make changes to some of the other abilities and mechanics you’re familiar with. This list and the summary of talent changes below it are by no means comprehensive, but they should give you a good sense of what we intend for each spec.
- Restoration shaman and other healing classes will need to pay attention to mana more than they’ve had to during Wrath of the Lich King. Spirit will be the Restoration shaman’s primary mana-regeneration stat.
- We’re making changes to which classes and specs are able to dispel magic, diseases, curses, and poison, largely for PvP purposes. Shaman will have Cleanse Spirit as a baseline ability, but it will only remove curses. Restoration shaman will have a talent that will improve Cleanse Spirit so that it also removes magic. Shaman will no longer be able to remove poison.
- Cleansing Totem will be removed from the game, as we want dispels to be a decision for players, not something done mindlessly. To that end, all dispels will cost slightly more mana, and you will waste the spell if you cast it when there is nothing to remove. (Currently, the dispel is only cast when there is something to remove, which encourages spamming ‘just in case.”) We will balance PvE dispelling with this new model in mind.
- Totem of Wrath now will replace Flametongue Totem for all shaman, and dropping this totem will buff the group’s spell power by 4%. Elemental shaman will have a talent that lets all Fire totems provide +10% spell power, allowing them to drop Searing, Magma, or Fire Elemental Totems without losing their spell-damage buff. The 4% and 10% buffs will be exclusive with each other and with the warlock’s Demonic Pact, so you can’t benefit from all of them at once. We’re also considering letting Elemental drop Searing Totem at range.
- We want to free up Enhancement global cooldowns to make the spec more dynamic to play. We’re considering, for example, increasing the cooldown of Lava Lash so shaman have time to work other interesting abilities into their rotation.
New Talents and Talent Changes
- Elemental Reach will be simplified so shaman have a more consistent spell range.
- We plan to add Earthquake as a deep Elemental talent for targeted and persistent AoE.
- Spirit Link will likely be worked back into deep Restoration in some form. The idea is that you will be able to link targets together so they share damage. When we had previously tried to implement Spirit Link, it was hard to balance and a little confusing. However, we really liked the concept — and so did players — so we are trying to bring it back.
- Elemental will have a deep talent that allows Spirit (which will appear on the gear they share with Restoration shaman) to boost their Hit rating.
- Ancestral Knowledge will boost mana pool size, not Intellect.
- Enhancing Totems will be replaced with Focused Strikes, which will improve the damage of the new spell Primal Strike and Stormstrike.
- With the Mastery system, we’re also considering removing a number of talents that grant passive bonuses, such as Mental Quickness, Improved Windfury Totem, Mental Dexterity, Call of Thunder, Tidal Mastery, Purification, Nature’s Blessing, and others, to allow players more freedom to choose more interesting talents.

Elemental Overload: Your direct-damage spells have a chance to proc a less powerful ‘bonus” version of the spell. This will work much like the current Lightning Overload talent, but would also apply to Lava Burst.
Nature Damage: This will provide a passive bonus to the Nature damage dealt by the Enhancement shaman.
Deep Healing: Your direct heals will do more healing when the target’s health is lower. This will scale to damage (e.g. someone at 29% health would receive more healing than someone at 30%) rather than have arbitrary break points.
We hope you enjoyed this preview, and we’re looking forward to hearing your thoughts and feedback on these additions and changes. Please keep in mind that this information represents a work in progress and is subject to change as development on Cataclysm continues.

Elemental
Spell Damage (Thumbs Up)For Obvious Reasons
Spell Crit (Thumbs Down)Frankly because we dont need more Crit (We gain 3% From Totem of Wrath and 5% More From Elemental Oath) Give us a Spell Haste Upgrade Not Spell Crit
Elemental Overload (Thumbs Up)we already get this to sometimes Proc our LB or CL but it would be kewl to Proc it on LvB
Unleash Weapon – Flametongue Weapon (Thumbs Up) I Like the Instant Moderate Fire Damage (Prolly be equal to Flame Shock Initial Damage when Applied) but the Increase Next Fire Spells Damage by 20% is Going to Be Kick Ass for our Lava Burst
Spiritwalker’s Grace (Thumbs Up) Because i hate When my DPS Gets Lowered Because i have to move out of fire or do something to stop my Channeling.
Totem of Wrath (Thumbs Up)Elemental Shamans increase SP by 10% and dont need ToW to be down we can have Any Totem down and still gain the 10% SP Buff. I personally Hate Losing my SP Bonus when i pop Magma Totem on Trash to AoE
(But we will still have the 3% Crit Bonus? or is that being Taken away from the Totem because our Mastery Increases Crit?)
Overall (Elemental Point of View) (5 Thumbs Up – 1 Thumbs Down And 1 Question Unanswered (About Totem of Wrath 3% Crit Going or Staying))

Thank you for the AoE heal, it certainly was lacking from the shaman healing arsenal but i have to express severe disappointment for the loss of a clensing totem and on a further kick in the butt we lose the ability to remove poison all together, I dont care about removing magic or curses theres enough classes to remove curses i think its a natural fit for Shamans to remove Poisons as they are a nature based healer, personally i think they can keep there spirit link and even there moving while casting for my ability to cure poison and disease, even if it isnt a totem or if the totem had a CD or something like Mana Tide Totem.

Will instant spells be useable mid-casting with grace? If yes, enhansement will be running 2 rotations at once, 1 elemental and 1 enhancement!

As i’ve said before in another forum on wow-track, i concentrate fully on my Enhance Shaman, admit-ably im a little nervous on how im going too completely re-think my class, atm im pulling 8k+ dps on hardest dummys, and ofc im happy with this as im only GS 5.4k, i would really like it of someone can fill me in on how Unleash Weapon (Which i am really excited about), and Spirit Walkers Grace will effect the way we play, and more info on if Primal strike will be included in a level capped rotation and if the “nerfing” of Lava Lash will lower its priority even more, or completely wipe it out of our rotation.
As many who play Enhance Shaman know, in a boss fight, our rotation is bloody frantic, With more spells this could mean we will need too get rid of a spell from our rotation, such as in VH hc when im at 11k+ nuke burst mode, i eliminate Flame Shock, love too see some more Enhance Shaman opineons,
Overall, its a turn for the best, And tyhe new spells are original, which i like very much,
Jasper.

I am extremely excited about he new changes. I have two shaman and have each spec represented, if it’s not apparent I love the class. Each spec is undergoing a few changes and deserve to be addressed accordingly.
As far as resto, healing rain…….AMAZING! The only part of druif healing I love is the visual effects of tranquility, now we have an extremely helpful heal other than chain heal. While I will miss the ability to cleanse poisons I feel it adds a new aspect to CC and brings back a part of the game WoTLK is missing.
In reference to elemental…. why, oh why must we always be forgotten? While earthquake is a…. suitable answer to our aoe damage, our single target dps is still being glazed over and forgotten.
Now to my favorite, enhancement. This spec is sooo fun to play post lvl 40 and now with primal strike it will be bearable to play again (pre 40). Now to what I would love for them to do, I am with Roodcow on this one, the original idea was a tank spec… so just do it already. Add a spirit of the ancestors talent that increases defense, if they are re-doing all the trees it would be a perfect time to do so.
All in all, I am very happy with the changes and excited to see them in action. It seems we are sticking to our namesake… jack of all trades and master of none.

Spiritwalker’s Grace should be something fun. I know when I am healing I hate those tanks that love to move outta my range. No more of that. =D
And Healing Rain? Pleeeease come faster.
For Enhance I am pretty excited about Unleash Weapon. It sounds neat. I wanna test out Primal Strike as well. And the Nature Damage talent going in our tree should help our dps a shit ton.
Only thing I can see that I am unhappy about is losing the ability to cleanse poisons. I’d rather be able to do that than magic. And I’ll miss Cleansing Totem.

I’m an Elemental Shaman, and from this article (helpful as it is), I still don’t see significant changes to what I’m able to do. The extra spell proc is …nice. The extra Spell Damage is also …nice. But how about some abilities that aren’t passive? Abilities that I can use strategically? Unlike other caster classes, I have a limited number of options when a fight calls for lots of movement, interupting my casts. I’m also limited in terms of AoE. I’d like to see that change, if at all possible.
I’ve said this from the moment my Shaman was able to group with others: The Shaman class is a support class. We make other classes shine. Totem of Wrath? Other casters love it. Wrath of Air? Other casters love it too. What ‘I’ don’t love is the lack of recognition Elemental Shaman receive for what we contribute to other Caster’s DPS. Give us more options for dealing damage while still boosting other’s DPS. Give us an AoE attack on par with that of Warlocks, Mages, Boomkins, etc. Even Hunters have better AoE’s than Elementals.
Oh, and how about revamping the appearance of our elementals? The elementals in Northrend look great! But my poor little Earth and Fire Elementals look lame compared to them. How hard would it be to make a simple cosmetic change like that? I think it’s long overdue. And what about adding another elemental for us when we hit the new level cap? Hmm?
Consider THIS heavy feedback, as well.

Unleash Weapon is not “on next swing”, upon activation it will provide a buff that persists *for* the next five swings. Compare this to, for example, Heroic Strike, where you use the ability but nothing happens until the toon does a white swing, versus an instant damage ability that then speeds up your next 5 attacks.

What happened to no ‘on next swing’ mechanics? Seems a bit odd to me they’d add an ‘on next swing/cast’ to as the only new spell at 81.
Otherwise, looks interesting. Healing Rain sounds amazing, I hope to get in and test it out
. Most of the talent changes are pretty strait forward, but losing the poison removing capabilities will be rough. Oh well, dragons shouldn’t poison right?

I feel like enhace and resto got the best of the class while elemental was neglected once again… why does blizz hate this spec so much? elem overload wont compensate for dmg even if lava burst procs too since they r lowering the bonus for it… what about the T10 4 set bonus? how useless can that be? and a new aoe? what for? isnt fire nova enough to drain mana very quick? moreover now that mana regain will be a bigger issue?
Have u ever seen an elem shaman be top dps in a raid? lately i feel like being a “support” dps.

So far I like what I am reading, good riddance to cleansing totem, I see not dispelling poison will take some time to get use to . Love the casting on the move. They could have stuck with the totem line of thinking and just made the Healing stream totem be the useful AOE Heal, wasted totem for the most part in my opinion. A healing totem which worked like Mana Tide would have fit nicely in the Shaman mechanic of things, should have been fairly easy change as well. Over all can’t wait to try out the new heals. Looking forward to taking them for a spin

Mindlessly? I think not… I have to sacrifice my real totems to drop a useless tot we could heal through:) and on an unrelated note, I hope primal strike is a “high threat” ability…. I need a “half ass taunt” if I can continue proving ppl that shamans have tanking potential:) again…..cmon blizz…. Gimme back my tank spec

To begin with, GRACE ROCKS! It will actually give a melee tone to Shamman casting, possibly intergrating it in enchantment specs, or even allowing melee chaneled moves. Why, Oh, Why can’t I have a Worgen Shammy? Think of it, it would mix perfectly with the Worgen’s Feral character. Consider this HEAVY feedback.

i think the losing of poison is going to considerably hamper the shaman class..again rogues have an advantage…can anything compare to the rogues crying and help that they get from WOW.. first they can be trappped and now poisons not being dispelled.
Hot debate. What do you think?

The loss of the poison clensing will be hard to get used to. The moving while casting and the AoE healing and damage will be a defenate help to the healing that we do now OR the AoE damage that needs to be done.
spirit link will be intresting to figure out… and the question will be who will be linked togther?
the primal strike is a intresting idea, I remember leveling low level as resto then going to enhance at lv40 for the DW…. this may help a lot.
The loss of the clensing totem will not be that great. Its not used that much at all in raiding and is only useful in heroics because of the group only restriction.
The mana regen based on spirit hopefully they will get down correctly. At the moment its like 2 spirit for 1 mp5.
Theres no note to see if they are doing anything to chain heal… if nothing is changed then the shaman will be OP at raid healing.
