In World of Warcraft: Cataclysm we’ll be making several changes to class talents and abilities across the board. While this list only outlines some of our plans for the paladin class, we want to give you a look at the new high-level abilities and an overview of how the new Mastery system will work with each talent spec.
New Paladin Spells
Blinding Shield (level 81): Causes damage and blinds all nearby targets. This effect might end up only damaging those facing the paladin’s shield, in a manner similar to Eadric the Pure’s ability Radiance in Trial of the Champion. The Holy tree will have a talent to increase the damage and critical strike chance, while the Protection tree will have a talent to make this spell instant cast. 2-second base cast time. Requires a shield.
Healing Hands (level 83): Healing Hands is a new healing spell. The paladin radiates heals from him or herself, almost like a Healing Stream Totem. It has a short range, but a long enough duration that the paladin can cast other heals while Healing Hands remains active. 15-second cooldown. 6-second duration.
Guardian of Ancient Kings (level 85): Summons a temporary guardian that looks like a winged creature of light armed with a sword. The visual is similar to that of the Resurrection spell used by the paladin in Warcraft III. The guardian has a different effect depending on the talent spec of the paladin. For Holy paladins, the guardian heals the most wounded ally in the area. For Protection paladins, the guardian absorbs some incoming damage. For Retribution paladins, it damages an enemy, similar to the death knight Gargoyle or the Nibelung staff. 3-minute cooldown. 30-second duration (this might vary depending on which guardian appears).
Next you will find a list of some of the paladin spell and ability changes, followed by our intentions for improving each talent tree for the release of Cataclysm. There will be further changes, but those revealed below should offer some insight into our goals.
Changes to Abilities and Mechanics
- Crusader Strike will be a core ability for all paladins, gained at level 1. We think the paladin leveling experience is hurt by not having an instant attack. Retribution will be getting a new talent in its place that either modifies Crusader Strike or replaces it completely.
- Cleanse is being rebalanced to work with the new dispel system. It will dispel defensive magic (debuffs on friendly targets), diseases, and poisons.
- Blessing of Might will provide the benefit of Wisdom as well. If you have two paladins in your group, one will do Kings on everyone and the other will do Might on everyone. There should be much less need, and ideally no need, to provide specific buffs to specific classes.
- Holy Shock will be a core healing spell available to all paladins.
New Talents and Talent Changes
- We want to ease off the defensive capabilities of Retribution and Holy paladins slightly. We think the powerful paladin defenses have been one of the things holding Retribution paladins back, especially in Arenas. One change we’re considering is lowering Divine Shield’s duration by a couple of seconds. Having said that, Retribution does pretty well in Battlegrounds, and Battlegrounds will be a much bigger focus in Cataclysm since they can provide the best PvP rewards. Furthermore, the healing environment of Cataclysm is going to be different such that a paladin may not be able to fully heal themselves during the duration of Divine Shield to begin with, so this may not be a problem.
- We feel Retribution paladins need one more mechanic which involves some risk of the player pushing the wrong button, making the rotation a bit less forgiving. In addition, we want to add to this spec more PvP utility. Right now the successes of the Retribution paladin in PvP seem to be reduced to either doing decent burst damage, or just being good at staying alive.
- We want to increase the duration of Sacred Shield to 30 minutes and keep the limit to one target. The intention is that the paladin can use it on their main healing target. That said, we would like to improve the Holy paladin toolbox and niche so that they don’t feel quite like the obvious choice for tank healing while perceived as a weak group healer.
- We want to add to the Holy tree a nice big heal to correspond with Greater Heal. Flash of Light remains the expensive, fast heal and Holy Light is the go-to heal that has average efficiency and throughput. Beacon of Light will be changed to work with Flash of Light. We like the ability, but want paladins to use it intelligently and not be constantly healing for twice as much.
- Holy paladins will use spirit as their mana regeneration stat.
- Protection paladins need a different rotation between single-target and multi-target tanking. Likewise, we’re looking to add the necessity to use an additional cooldown in each rotation.
- Holy Shield will no longer have charges. It will be designed to improve block chance while active, and will continue to provide a small amount of damage and threat.

Vengeance: This is the damage-received-to-attack-power conversion that all tanks share.
Critical Healing Effect: When the paladin gets a crit on a heal, it will heal for more.
Block Amount: We want to keep the kit of the paladin as a tank who blocks a lot. So by contrast, the warrior tank will sometimes get critical blocks, but the paladin will absorb more damage with normal blocks.
Holy Damage: Any attack that does Holy damage will have its damage increased.
This concludes this Cataclysm preview for the paladin class. The development of these changes will continue to evolve in the coming months. Please be sure to provide any feedback and thoughts you might have on what was covered here.

As far as the holy changes go, I think we have been a bit spoiled lately. Holy Paladins are so self-synergistic that its tough to really mess it up unless your gearing for spirit or some foolishness. It’ll be interesting to see how everything works out at 85.

LOL! I can see how many pallies voted on each topic
ARE YOU KIDDING? Buff a pally in PVP? Holding them BACK? You obviously don’t play a clothy in any arena. Next you should take anything that hinders a rogue and increase the damage of their poisons.

Does this guy even have a paladin?
Change Beacon to work with flash of light? Already works with it.
Flash of Light remaining the expensive, fast heal? It’s the cheap, efficient one that you can cast all day.
Why don’t we get a review from a guy that actually has a holy paladin?

WHOA WTF? IS blizz a 3 yr old stomping in a sandbox fucking up my castle? Cause these changes are HORRIBLE!!!! Holy Shock= all specs? wtf, thats a healadin unique ability why are you taking it away from us. Healing Hands? lol. Going to have a super short range healing ability, ummmmm wtf, why do resto shamans get healing rain and we get the crappy ugly sister version of the spell? And ret paladins with MOAR PVP UTILITIES! Does blizz even PLAY WOW? I give up on healadin as of now, its like blizz took into consideration what we asked for then in twisted and sick way morphed it and slapped us in the face.

I play a holy pally, and that’s all I’ve evered played and that’s all i ever want to play. However, with this new nerfs i don’t know I’ll be able to heal effectively. This aoe heal is useless, considering most of the time in raids the members are spread out, and it’s not gonna heal much. You are going todebuff our Divine Shield, which is what makes our class, you even admit that it is hard to heal yourself while in it, so why are you nerfing it? Also this gaurding could be helpful, but with a large CD like it has, is the Damgage or healing it does really going to be that effective. Also, paladins usually have a hard time competeing with other healing classes, such as the OP druid trees. Making spells cost double with beacon, will make us go oom so fast, allready considering pallies go oom first ALWAYS! I’m just saying pallys are fine the way they are and the drastic changes you are making are not going to help us.

Hmmm, replace Consecration with Crusader Strike (glyphed for double damage and double cooldown), and replace Hammer of the Righteous with Holy Shock (as is).
For an AoE rotation, replace Shield of Righteousness with Blinding Shield (with instant cast talent).
And of course, all 3 spells would have to recieve the Righteous Fury threat modifier… an extra high threat modifier on Blinding Shield would be a real help since it would suffer from AoE target capping.
That’ll give the theory crafters something to chew on!

Well now I’m getting more and more interested in the new talents Pallies will be getting. Healing hands has alot of Holydins like WTF!!! Reading the effect the spell does will actually put us in an amazing healing position. Imagine being able to tank heal and raid heal, think of it like a Disc Priest Resto Sammy put together. Though our niche is still going to be tank heals since we only really got two spells that heals more than one target at a time when Cata comes out. Protadins already I believe are some of the best tanks out there. I think that new spell Blinding shield is going to be a fun one, that last spell at 85 the guardian is going to be sweet. As a Protadin if Righteous Fury,Con, and Seal of Corruption isn’t nerfed I have no worries at all that we will keep aggro and rip it away from other players with no problem at all. AS far as Ret goes, sorry DPS pallies never been one lol. Cata looks like it’s going more towards PVP and I’m thinking about respeccing to Ret if that happens it’s going to suck getting all the gear again though but yeah I like the new spells and once again Holydins don’t fret on loosing your raid spot as tank heals trust me we got it locked down still flash of light, beacon, holy light and healing hands together? Healers will be afraid of us hahaha

I think its kind of stupid their buffing them for pvp but not raids. They’re dps is only high in ICC becouse of most targets are undead. Other than that its pretty low. They should give them some sort of single target thing. Ret Paladins are all about AoE. Single target dps isn’t that high on them.

I agree with Bloodnight [Azjol Narub].
I’m pulling 10k tps with a 5665 gearscore on single targets (Falconys [Kargath]) any dps that has to hold back from that kind of threat either: (a)has threat reducing abilities that they are not using, or (b) are not following the mechanics of the raid (staying on Saurfang instead of killing the beasts, for example)
I’ll confess to using a “high threat” talent build, but isn’t that why we are allowed to respec? Fix your problems and it’ll stop being an issue. Thanks to Maintankadin.com and ElitestJerks.com for teaching me how to do it right.
BTW: If you are trying to tank Marrowgar with 6 frames per second, your threat will go up 10% by getting a new PC and your healers will stop yelling at you to get out of the fire. Then you won’t need the added survivability because you’ll be where you are supposed to be… just a suggestion.

i think this is all crap these changes are gonna make me reroll or go prot maybe just stop playing ffs a holy winged pet that heals a random low health target give me a break wheres my circle of healing
plus pallys have always bin tank healers … who cares about all the spam overhealing thats what they do .. after these changes pallys will be the worst healers on the bored … 100% un-needed single target healers .. it will be worse than pre bc … get ready for the days of non stop flashing and low meters to try to push some sort of effective raid healing out of a tank healer … booo blizzard thanks for ruining it for me

im not happy with quite a few of the changes to the tanking and healing. like some of you i think the AoE heal is just a slap in the face. better off making a talent to where consecration heals friendly party member. making it to where you have to have 2 different rotations for tanking? seriously? i know some of you have stated that its hard to hold agro on single bosses. i don’t have any problem holding agro. actually at times i have to watch my agro for other tanks. so for those having issues of holding agro go and look at my spec and glyphs for incite.
i do like the blinding shield. definitely can be useful.
for hose who dont understand about the ret pali, they are getting nerfed. no more face rolling for them.

I’m rather surprised by how subtle these changes are. After “coming into my own” as a Healer and Tank paladin durring wrath, I was a bit anxious about what they might take away from us. After reading the Death Knight preview, I was exited about what they might give us. Ultimately, it sounds like Falconys will be rolling into Cataclysm with hope and enthusiasm both for the revisions within the class and revisions within the game overall.
P.S. I vote for something like “Blessing of the Crusader” but it’ll probably be more like “Blessing of Justice”… they’ll name it after a spell I have almost never actually seen used in game.
It all comes down to one fact: the people who are on top of things now will come out on top in Cataclysm, the noobtards will still be noobtards, and the ones in the middle will still be just average players.

All in all, seems to be good changes though I absolutely hate leveling, MOAR RAIDS less leveling lol. Im excited that Pally Tanks will finally have a single tanking rotation as well as a aoe tanking rotation. And Ret seems to get a slight buff as well, however I’m still not convinced on the Holy spec…am I just slow and can’t grasp the changes for the better or does it seem that they have made healing a little more challenging with another useless spell? Though the fact that we have a “greater heal” will be nice. I don’t feel as though we are the “weaker link” in the group for healing, that is why you have Holy Paladins and Disc. Priest, to heal tanks, that is our jobs!

Honestly, I’m pretty unimpressed. Like someone brought up before, Healing Hands, for a healidan will be useless, especially if Blizz stays with their current raid mechanics that forces raids to stay spread apart. BoL change? I use that for things like Marrowgar, Anub, Gunship Battle, etc. etc. Overall, though, the changes are rather underwhelming. The Guardian is kinda cool, but seems to make little sense for a pally. Healing Hands sounds like it’ll be purely for healing melee. Blinding shield? Not that great. Kinda feels like ret and prot pallies are getting a slight buff and healidans are getting nerfed.

over all i like the changes.but i think blinding sheild should have a differnt effect for each spec.for holly make it an aoe heal, prot leave the effect the same, for ret it should deal more damage. you could easaly make it something to spec into.the only thing i dont like is that every spec is geting holly shock,i think this spell should be for healadins only.

really lame about the Beacon change. keep that the same and I’m okay with the changes. I hope ret gets a small buff, or at least an interrupt for pvp. I was thinking they would do something like this with holy shock, I think it will be a good thing.

Lately I’ve been Holy sub prot for healing. I like having the imp devo aura in five mans when I can’t expect a Pally tank to bring that 6% and obv divine sac can be very useful. I wonder if I’m going to be switching to Holy sub ret just so my BoM can get both imp blessing talents, if they still exist in their current form that is.
In any case I’m really happy about these announcements. I was dreading reading this ever since I read the rogue changes.

I’m a pally tank and I gotta say I do like the changes to our tanking. People always complain that pally tanking is a joke while every other tank class is much harder, which I don’t quite agree with, but I think that making them more complex will add some challenge making them less of the “I roll pally cause they are easy to play” class and more of a class that people really do need to learn to play. Also, hopefully the single target tanking rotation will make it a little easier to keep aggro on bosses, which can be hard for pallies when the raid is filled with top dps people.
I also like the re-introduction of block in a way. Since ICC and ToC came out, block has pretty much been non-existent on gear and making blocking the main damage mitigation use for pallies, makes them a little more unique.
Not sure how the whole guardian thing will work cause I’m not sure if it’s supposed to be a sort of “oh crap” button and share a CD with Divine Protection etc. or if it will be more part of our long fight rotation.
Overall, I like the changes. They seem to be reasonable and not too extreme. Hope it works out

hmmm the guardian of ancient kings thing looks fun… but the blinding shield thing is kinda weird… will it work like radiance that eadric has? then its kinda weird if it is a buff thing, then you got your enemies blinded all the time. would be fun tho if it is like that.

Im liking most of these changes, however not happy with the spirit – mana regen thing and the fact that all pallies can now use holy shock.
As a healdin i love the fact they’re making us a little better at raid healing and giving us a “Greater Heal” move.
Overall, should be positive changes and i like it
