We’re continuing to refine the badge/emblem and PvP point systems in Cataclysm and we’d like to share some of those changes with you today. Please enjoy!
Our primary goal when approaching badges in Cataclysm is to address a lot of the confusion that comes with these currency systems. To that end we’re changing badges to a more straightforward point system, similar to the ones we’ve used for a while for Arenas and Battlegrounds. There will be a total of four types of points you can earn in Cataclysm (two for PvE and two for PvP), and these will remain the same even as we introduce new content.
Here’s the breakdown:
PvE
Hero Points — Low-tier, easier-to-get PVE points. Maximum cap to how many you can own, but no cap to how quickly you can earn them. Earned from most dungeons. (most like the current Emblem of Triumph)
Valor Points — High-tier, harder-to-get PvE points. Maximum cap to how many you can own, as well as a cap to how many you can earn per week. Earned from Dungeon Finder daily Heroic and from raids. (most like the current Emblem of Frost)
PvP
Honor Points — Low-tier, easier-to-get PVP points. There will be a maximum cap to how many you can own, but no cap to how quickly you can earn them. Earned from most PvP activities.
Conquest Points — High-tier, harder-to-get PvP points. There will be a maximum cap to how many you can own, and a cap to how many you can earn per week. Earned from winning Rated Battlegrounds or Arenas. (currently called Arena Points)
When a new tier of raiding gear is released or a new PvP season begins, your higher tier of points will be converted into the lower tier. For instance, if a new tier of raid gear is released, your Valor points will be converted to Hero points, and similarly if a new PvP season begins your Conquest points will be converted to Honor points. Of course that means with these new releases you’ll always begin without any of the higher tier of points, and thus be unable to stockpile them.
As noted for Conquest points, the Rated Battlegrounds and Arenas will be sharing this same point type. Because of that, it will in fact be possible to get the best PvP items without setting foot in Arena; however, more powerful armor and weapons will of course require more Conquest points, so players who win their matches more often will still gear up faster. We’re removing personal rating requirements on almost all items; they’re definitely removed for weapons. We might offer a few items to the absolute best players based on personal rating, largely as cosmetic or ‘bragging rights’ type items. And you’ll have the option of purchasing the previous season’s gear with the more readily available Honor points.
We do plan to have a way to convert Honor points (PvP) into Hero points (PvE), and vice versa, at a loss. The conversions will be possible, but it won’t be a 1:1 rate, and you’ll have fewer points after the conversion process. We won’t allow the higher tiers to be exchanged for each other, however.
To explain the reasoning for the weekly cap on points for the higher tiers, this is to provide flexibility in how players choose to earn the points without feeling like they have to do all of the content as often as it is available. If your Valor income from raiding is sufficient, you may not feel the need to run Dungeon Finder every night, or perhaps even at all. Likewise, a PvP player could choose to participate in a lot of Rated Battlegrounds but no Arenas, or focus on both, and still be able to earn the points they want.
We realize that with any changes to progression pathways there are going to be questions. We’re eagerly awaiting any that we may have left unanswered. To the comments!

Personally I think everyone is jumping the gun here.
You all are debating over something that will not happen for months, as happened with previous expos. This is preliminary as to ascertain the viability of such changes.
The story remains the same… QQ “I hate the new changes”… Look, play and enjoy the game for what it is or simply quit playing. In truth, most these “boycotters” may take a hiatus but will never truly quit, hence the disgust and disdain in their posts.
Fact: The game must ever evolve as to accommodate all players of all levels. Fact: Most changes come to be from some level of feedback from players like us. Fact: I(and most of you as well) will continue to play this game regardless of our disapproval of changes to be made.
Just play or don’t… It’s a game and meant to be fun… Lighten up…

Wambulance… we should start a guild called and instantly g-kick anybody who whines incessantly about pointless idiocy.
I think this is a spectacular way to streamline the whole process. My only request is that when a tier vendor gets downgraded from high-level to low-level due to new content, they should add items for the gear slots not previously provided.
Example: a valor vendor might sell head, chest, shoulders, legs, gloves, back, boots. Once that tier is downgraded you add to that vendor’s wares wrists, waist, neck, 1 ring, 1 trinket, offhand, relic/ranged, and weapon… but possibly as lower item-level stuff.
Example: first 7 pieces ilvl 245, remaining 8 pieces ilvl 232, but all available with triumph badges.
That would make gearing new alts incredibly straight forward, being able to get everything but your second trinket and second ring from a downgraded version of the previous tier. No excuse for lvl85 to be more than one tier behind the current maximum except that you don’t play it.

I mean, it’s that or new emblems. Compared, it’s like new emblem comes, but your Triumphs are turned into frosts.

You got it all wrong. Think of frost emblems. They will not always be the best emblem out there, right? Or you can faceroll ICC at lvl 85 to farm top gear. One day, they will have the value of your triumph or even heroism emblems, due to the new gear being bought with god-knows-what emblem. Now, what blizzard does is this: they switch your hard-earned frost emblems for triumph, BUT the armor you want, wich was bought for a total of 375 frost, will now be bought with triumph. So, you had 200 frost? Needed 175 more? But did your heroics also give you, say, 200 triumph emblems? That means you can now buy full T10 armor, 88 days earlier! It is you and I, the casual players, that win from this. Now, you can start collecting frost emblems all over again from 0, but this time you wear T10 and want T11. By the time you’d have full T10, you’ll have full T10 +3 T11 pieces

I feel if someone wants to stock pile it is their choice and their badges. It is like someone going into work every day and being told all of the money you earned in U.S.D. will be transferred into Mexican peso’s. i sign on everyday for my daily heroics and take my 2 badges a day. I do not have time for weekly’s and rarely have time to run a full 25m or 10m anything. I also do my daily bg for the honor points. I shall do the math. for me to fully gear up i would need 2 pieces of gear at 50 frost badges then 3 at 95 frost badges. at my pace of 2 a day it would take 192 days that is a very long time so if i decide to just hold on to my badges and wait for the next set that should be my choice. I have earned that choice for be a solid 192 day player. I pay monthly and earn what i earn no one not even blizzard has the right to take away something i earn with my time because my time is valuable. The badges and gold in the game is monetary values in itself and if I decide to take my time and earn it, it then is mine. The value of worth and ownership should never be forgotten. if you take away something i have worked for just to make it less valuable then you are robbing me. If people feel it is unfair for people to stock pile and be able to get a entire set of gear then think about it even with any cap you give the people that have all the time in the world will still get the gear before you and it will take you the casual player even longer then the 192 days to earn what they will have first anyway.
In my conclusion if you must put a cap okay, but if i earn something do not even think about trying to take it away and turn it into something else that is now mine and I pay my monthly subscription for the right to earn it.

@Demtrod
Here’s what I got :
All ratings go off of gear, but stay otherwise. You can have 10 or 10.000 in any of the two, but this won’t affect your gear ( provided you get your hands on it).

Btw, may I ask that from now on, multi-leveled tier gear is aquired by upgrading the previous level( similar to t10) rather than being seperate ( like t9), and thus feel like the other part was a waste?

As for the cap, really no reason to cap either of them but if they do so what. I know i spent my frost emblems as soon as I got the piece I wanted. after I got all i wanted. it was saronite selling time or stocking up on them.

I like the badge system, but just to make sure – they are only removing personal rating, and not team rating?
Because, the only reason nowadays that i play wow is to get a higher rating, and get new pvp items, thats the only real fun thing to do when you’ve done VoA and ICC.
I just hope they find a good way to deal with it, lots of my friends quited WoW because they’ve been fighting their way through Ulduar, and then suddently you can get the eccact same, or even better, gear in a normal heroic instance.

And to add, Uber, if you had 5 hero points already, you’ll also get to buy that said piece imediatelly, rather than save an extra 5!

While you are correct in saying that your valor points would be changed to hero, the item you were after would now be considered “lower tier” gear, thus allowing you to purchase the item you were after with hero points rather than valor because it would no longer be considered “higher tier”. I personally like this system. In my opinion, it seems to simplify things. Rather than having to trade down from frost to triumph.. and so on, i’m assuming blizzard will price items based on their utility in perspective to the gear available during the current patch.

Uberbeast. If you read the top a little more thoroughly it states, when the new tier gear gets realesed. The previous set also gets knocked down. So you can still spend your hard waned emblems on the ear you were saving for.

Personally, I dislike the change where your valor pts will turn into hero pts when new gear comes out. Lets say that you need maybe 5 points to buy a piece of gear that costs like 100 points. Then, the next day, the new tier is released and all your valor points say “Bye bye” and are converted into hero points. You might’ve even spent 2 months saving up, but with that update they would just all go away. I really think that would suck if it happened to me or anyone else so I do not like this new idea.

I currently love this idea, provided that they stick to it for the rest of the expansions. I hate that to buy a gem or Heirloom gear you have to go through 3 different (4 if you have nothing left to spend Frost on) vendors to get them. Sure, its easy to do but on the same token, how hard is it to just make everything the current heroic emblem price? if you are hoarding (no pun intended) the points then you probably don’t need gear therefore unaffected by the loss of points. The weekly cap we have dealt with already and therefor moot.
A few questions:
1) will there be a conversion for current emblems?
I am lifeless enough to have multiple 80′s and some of them don’t have the current triumph or frost gear. will this still be obtainable after the release as its been said the gear from ICC will be good enough to take us though the new content?
2) Old content still drops badges of justice and what not, will this be converted too?
Probably not but it came to mind.
3) Can we get an idea of the point caps and possibly a round about of gear cost?
This may help to quell some of the QQ’ing going on. Aaaaaannnd im very curious to know!
THANKS BLIZZ!

They DO say you won’t get the two emblems due to cap ( as they said you can leave some stuff out) but I do agree with it. The stock cap sounds kinda problematic, not for any specific reason, just feels wrong ( emphasis on lost Valor points due to hero cap). Downgrading emblems and gear cost of “obsolete” gear Mekes sense ( imagine someone raiding the brand-new at the time Naxx, logging out for 9 months to play on alts and get ICC gear the second it comes out) and will allow rookies to rocket into the current raid tier. In addition, love the name Valor points. Wondered just the other day ” why would they leave such a nice word out of Endgame? P.S. Will any of the top-tier caps be 42?

I’m not exactly sure what the difficulty is with a point cap, aside from those who would like to stockpile for when the next tier of gear is released (or made purchasable with lower level points.) If you want to buy two pieces of gear before equipping one, you don’t need to save up all the points before buying the first, unless your bank is completely filled. Do people quit playing the game now, when they run out of things to buy with triumph badges? With frost? Why would they if there were a cap on the things?
Shagzdruid, I think that they mean that there will be a limit to how many valor points you can earn in a week, just as there is currently a limit to how many frost you can earn in a week (daily heroics plus weeklies plus raid boss kills.)
Bloodycure, why would capping triumph badges change your 8 hour weekends? If you are near the cap, you go buy the gems or whatever and return to doing heroics (or whatever sources they give us in Cataclysm.)
Currently honor points are capped, and in my experience all it does is prevent a player from building a huge number of them ahead of time and buying out the previous season’s arena gear immediately upon release. The only way to reach the cap is to run out of gear to buy and then fail to buy gems with the extra.
Most players won’t be capping higher level points because they’ll spend them on gear the instant they are able, but for those who manage to buy out the shop, why would it matter? When they are converted into lower level points, they’ll only be useful to you in buying gems (or whatever other junk they use as a point outlet) as you’ll already have the entirety of the previous highest set, and I imagine that they’ll have a means of converting valor into hero points, for those poor souls who are hitting the valor point cap (QQ). It’s exactly like the current system, with a cap, but those who HAVE capped their hero points but haven’t finished buying all of the valor point gear will be able to buy some of that level gear immediately upon its re-release as lower tier stuff.

well actually only the valor point will be capped for how many you can get per week not hero point there will be a max number u can have at one time but not how many you can earn in a day or week and if your just starting to get gear your gonna buy the gear when you get enuff points now just stock pile them and when u dont need the gear and just use them to buy stuff like gems or any other just buy them when u get close to the cap honestly i dont think this will change anything but ppl stock piling massive amounts of point that they are never planning to use

Um a cap on Badge Points? Okay I shun that idea. Anon there is a cap on both Hero and Valor points read it again… That will make Lvl 85′s less interested in playing it all day. On my days off if I was bored on the weekend I’d play WoW for like 8 hours at a time, stacking up on Emblems from heroics to get certain items like gems just to sell, plus pick up blue items and sell them for extra gold. It won’t seem like any benefit to me at all when Hero points are capped off. Heroics used to be about stocking up as much as you can to gear up for the beginning raids like Naxx and EoE and if you are maxxed out on heroic gear just to have fun, once you reach a certain gear score you don’t even take heroics seriously anymore. I think the caps on heroic points is BS

The overall cap was not what I was referring to by the way, I was talking about the amount earned per week cap… because once its reached there is no reason to log that toon in again until reset.

I don’t see much of a problem with this. It’s pretty much the same thing as honor/arena points. I just hope that the points gained make up for the loss of separate 10 and 25 man raids

Seems to me like there should be no cap on the lower tier points, or at least a very large cap. What would it benefit to stockpiling lower points, all you can get is heirlooms and low PvE and PvP gear.

The valor point conversion seems contradictory. They’re saying they will convert the valors to heros to avoid stockpiling, but the amount of points you can have will be capped. Why would you need to convert them then? It’s not like you could save up a ton of points and fully outfit yourself when a new tier is released.

well capping the number of points will not be good. there are several times in the progression of marks that i had to stock pile so i could get two pieces of gear. just getting one piece would have hurt my dps.(ex. lost hit rating by 84 on chest piece, but gained 82 getting shoulders)no reason to hinder how many badges one aquires, unless the limit is very high. making us spend them on unwanted gear does not sound right. also what is a player to do when he has the badge gear..not play anymore or to play and not recievee anything..that is worse than grinding.

Capping any type of points is a bad choice. All this will do is make people bored, which will make them log in less, which will lead to them not logging in at all.
