This is a very nice little guide written for people that are new to Disc Priest, ie “help me I’m new to disc”. It is written by a space goat called Mwng of Twilight’s Hammer, EU. Original post can be found on the priest forums.
Overview
Discipline is a support spec, you won’t be the designated tank healer and you won’t really be responsible for the raid “healing” either. Your job is to prevent as much damage as possible via shielding in order to make healing more manageable for the other healers in your raid.
While you might never top meters this way (unless you’re using an addon that counts absorbs, which most people don’t) you’ll still be an incredible asset to your raid with your unique skills and style of play. This comes at a price however as Disc priests do not stack well due to the Weakened Soul debuff, meaning you’ll also likely be the only one.
Spec
There is not a lot of variation in Disc specs. So I’ll list the main 2.
(57/14/0) – Spec with Spell Warding, for those that don’t like fire.
(57/14/0 v2) – Spec with Divine Fury, for those that like throwing Smites and Gheals for whatever reason.
Style of Play
Clearly everyone’s style of play will differ; it’s one of the joys of not being a collective hive mind. But here’s a brief guide on how to go about it for those who are new.
You’ll want to PW: Shield everyone who has/is about to take damage at every opportunity. PW: Shield is your main spell, use it liberally I cannot stress this enough it’s your defining ability. It can absorb anywhere between 5-8k of damage depending on gear level, totally negating some boss abilities like the Lich King’s Infest.
Penance is used to quickly top anyone who is low, or on the tank to stack Grace in case you’re required to assist. Use Prayer of Mending pretty much on cooldown and when all 3 of these abilities on cooldown, Flash Heal anyone who’s still below 100%.
Your 2 unique abilities as Disc are Power Infusion; which should be cast on your raids best DPS caster whenever it’s available (it’s like a mini Heroism/Bloodlust for them), be aware that it can be overwritten by other buffs such as mage’s Arcane Power and it’s not so useful to cast during a Heroism/Bloodlust as most people will already be close to or at their haste cap.
Pain Suppression is your other ability, it should be cast on either the tank if the boss is about to use some sort of gimmick attack which will hit for a lot, or used to save a raid member from certain death if you believe they’re on too little health to survive the next area of effect attack and already have a Weakened Soul debuff up. There are 2 things to remember when using Pain Suppression, firstly coordinate with your tanks about who is using the next damage mitigation ability as it will go to waste if used in conjunction with a Shield Wall. Secondly don’t be put off by the part that states “reduces friendly target’s threat by 5%” some priests hesitate to use Pain Suppression on a tank in case they lose aggro, chances are at this point in the expansion, that’s not very likely to happen.
One of the hallmarks of a Disc priest is that like the DPS, they never stop casting. With talents like Rapture and Mental Strength giving you a large mana pool in conjunction with Replenishment, you should rarely go out of mana. If you come close you have spells like Shadowfiend and Hymn of Hope (if you beg the other healers to pick up the slack for a few seconds) to bring you back to a safe level.
Tips and Tricks
Cheesing Rapture: If you avoid shielding the tanks on LK or some other boss with a large AoE damage spell (at least 12 seconds are required between the last shield breaking, so you can probably still manage to stagger shield the tanks if you time it right) and then have infest or some other massive AoE damage spell break all your shields at once. You’ll gain mana equivalent to each shield that broke in the same second as oppose to just one, meaning loads more mana return.
Using Power Infusion on yourself to save mana: While Power Infusion should normally be reserved for DPS casters only, it is possible to use on yourself to save a bit of mana when spamming Shields. It’s possible to save 776 mana for every 10 Shields cast (assuming the cost of a Shield is 666 mana, minus the cost of PI) and you should be able to cast about 20 Shields in the duration.
Using Shadowfiend in conjunction with Hymn of Hope: If you find yourself almost out of mana a great way to return a vast amount quickly is by using your Shadowfiend closely followed by a tick of Hymn of Hope. Hymn of Hope gives you a buff which will increase your maximum mana by 20% for 8 seconds while your Shadowfiend will return mana based on your max mana, meaning he’ll return 20% more than he would without Hymn (assuming he doesn’t sit by you dribbling or get himself killed).
Borrowed Time hasting: Borrowed time is useful for things other than Shield spamming. For example Penance will not consume Borrowed Time yet it will still benefit from a shorter channel time and maintain a 1 second gcd. You can also Borrowed Time haste your Resurrection, Hymn of Hope and Divine Hymn spells.
Gearing
As a Disc priest spellpower is your main stat, stack it like your life depends on it. This is lucky when it comes to gearing as every piece of caster gear will have spellpower on it, so you just need to remember these few things. Gear with haste AND crit on is the best throughput gear you can find so go for this stuff first. Failing that anything without hit on is game, chances are you’ll have already hit the haste soft cap (explained in a bit) so both haste and crit become equally as useful.
If gear has haste OR crit on chances are it’ll come with spirit OR mp5 too, in terms of regen, depending on how much intellect you have spirit will only be a little worse than mp5 when it comes to regen stats for a Disc priest. If you plan to dual spec Holy, spirit gear will be more useful to you than mp5 gear.
If you want a stat flowchart type thing (I dislike them as you should be gearing for what you lack) it’d look something like:
sp>>>>>>>>>>>>haste=crit>int>mp5=spi.
Disc Haste Soft Cap
Remember that haste stacks multiplicatively not additively. Borrowed Time + Enlightenment is not 25% + 6%. It is however 25% * 6%.
Assuming you have Wrath of Air and Moonkin/Ret Aura or it works out like the following;
1.5 / 1.25 (Borrowed Time) / 1.06 (Enlightenment) / 1.05 (Wrath of Air) / 1.03 (Aura) = 1.03
So after all constant raid buffs have been applied a 1.5 sec gcd becomes 1.03 when BT is up. Meaning you need around 5% haste from gear (164 haste rating) assuming all raid buffs to get a 1.5 gcd to a 1.0 gcd.
REMEMBER: Haste is still useful after this point, you do have more than 1 spell.
Gemming
Gemming as a Disc priest is rather easy:
Red: Runed Cardinal Ruby (23sp)
Yellow: Runed Cardinal Ruby (23sp)
Blue: Runed Cardinal Ruby (23sp)
Meta: Ember Skyflare Diamond (25sp+2%int)
However if you find that you’re still somehow going out of mana or you’re totally OCD about socket bonuses you could also gem:
Red: Runed Cardinal Ruby (23sp)
Yellow: Luminous Ametrine (12sp+10int)
Blue: Royal Dreadstone (12sp+5mp5) or Purified Dreadstone (12sp+10spi)
Meta: Insightful Earthsiege Diamond (21int+mana on spellcast).
Just remember that the first one will always be superior for throughput.
Glyphs
Major:
Glyph of Penance: Reduces the cooldown of Penance by 2 Sec.
Allows you to top people more frequently.
Glyph of Power Word: Shield: Your Power Word: Shield also heals the target for 20% of the absorption amount.
Adds a heal to your most used spell.
Glyph of Flash Heal: Reduces the mana cost of Flash Heal by 10%.
While you may not be having mana problems, not a whole lot of other useful glyphs to go here.
Minor:
Glyph of Shadowfiend: Receive 5% of your maximum mana if your Shadowfiend dies from damage.
I already wish mine was dead.
Glyph of Fortitude: Reduces the mana cost of your Power Word: Fortitude and Prayer of Fortitude spells by 50%.
Useful for buffing on the fly when people die during an encounter.
Glyph of Levitate: Your Levitate spell no longer requires a reagent.
Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
Being a Disc Priest myself, I can say quite happily that I can in fact tank heal in the ‘lower’ level 80 raids (10 man Naxx, OS, etc). I am still getting geared, with 20k Mana. While I have found that main tank healing in a raid is difficult, it’s not impossible. It simply calls for a priest to know what they’re doing, and when to do it, and for them to be flexible in what abilities they use. One Naxx run even had me healing all three tanks at once, because the Paladin healer was throwing a hissy fit over something and refused to heal. It was a great success, with a couple close calls.
Even with my ‘low’ mana, I tend to not go oom, due to keeping Shadowfiend on CD when needed, Hymns, etc. I tend to gear my disc priest the exact same way I would my Warlock. SP/Int/Stam/Crit, with Haste, Spirit, and MP5 thrown in when I notice a change is needed.
I don’t pretend to know elitist mumbo-jumbo, nor do I pretend I know what I’m doing. This is simply what works for me, and my personal style of play. Everyone plays different, and everyone has different preferred stats, etc. Some call for ‘MOAR SP~!’ or ‘MOAR MP5!’, I just prefer to play for fun, and fun for me is getting 10k Healing crits. I readily admit that I’m not the best healer, but it’s what I’m happy with. I never top the healing charts, but healing isn’t a race; it’s keeping your team-mates alive long enough to get the loot.
The point of this? Very basically, you can’t tell people how to spec or stack their own toons. Blizzard made the talent trees and stats customizable for a reason. It simply depends on what the player prefers to get out of their character’s roles. While a healer can’t heal with AP and Str gear; within the Caster stats I’ve tended to notice it doesn’t really matter how you stack your stats, so long as you know how to play your toon with those chosen stats.

@ What:
Stop. Just stop. How many more posts do you need downranked into oblivion before you realize people don’t like to be insulted? People disagree with you. Get over it. There’s no reason to start calling them names. It actually undermines your position.
@ jhudas:
Thank you for reinforcing what I’ve been saying all along. This discussion wasn’t limited to endgame, and given that it’s a disc guide for beginners, I’d say it’s targeted squarely in the opposite direction.
There is no single “this is the right way to gem” argument that holds water. It all depends on your gear, something the “SP or nothing” posters seem to have forgotten.

no where in here does it say end game or hard raiding content..as i stated earlier the only time a disc should stack int. is when gearing up… anything under 27k’ish mana you arent getting enough returns for your rapture..go int’ until you have around 28-30..that includes int/stats flasks..carry int scrolls(case your mageless)..anything that can get a int buff..then go spellpower(food)..otherwise you will oom alot..as you farm emblems and aquire gear that carries you into that comfortable mana pool…then anything you can put spellpower on..you should.
so recap….if your raiding ..you should know this but..spellpower is the ultimate pve enhancement..only breaking from that to meet +7/8 spellpower gem bonuses and..odds are you have ember skyflare which needs 3 reds(surprise..thats all sp).
a fresh 80 will have crap blues and be mana starved for a while…gather int until you are comfortable then as gear gets replaced…replace with sp red gems

Well im a well geared resto druid but back before when i had like 2xt9 rest 245 gear i healed way better then a pally x4 t10 + 251 + gear, it comes down to skill and rotations.
and talents. dont let other people tell you how to play learn to play ur class like you think is best.
people told me to respec etc. i told em no. im always on top of healing.
im now 2xt10 full 251+ and trinket 245, hands 232 -.-…
never win in voa >.< rofl !!
and im still on top. even when i slack. so people just need to learn there classes before even TRying to talk about others..
so if people in DISC gem int they have a reason just like i am 400 haste below haste cap!! and like im said others are haste capped and im on top so Capps my ass!!

LMAO @ everyone who says “STACK SP CUZ ITZ BEST 4 EVERY1 ALWAYS DUR DUR”
The OP is correct, there are certain things you should aim for. Downrank my post if it makes you feel better, but there *are* minimum stats you should be shooting for to improve your overall gameplay.
There are situations where SP IS NOT the best stat for you to stack in the interest of min/max. If you don’t believe me, check the gear of some of the top priests in the world. Their gearing strategies back up what I’m saying.
Taken from the EJ thread on priest healing in 3.3:
Rules of Thumb for Discipline Priests
* Pick up 11% of haste, (more if you don’t have full haste buffs in the raid or if you use PoH to a significant amount).
* Spellpower is the stat to stack for throughput and efficiency.
* If you need more mana, use regen trinkets, socket int if necessary.
* Quality MP5 gear is usually a bit better than spirit gear, but not by a lot.
* At high gear levels, you can get away without significant amounts of MP5 and spirit on gear.
Source: http://elitistjerks.com/f77/t97934-wotlk_healing_compendium_v3_3_3_icecrown_citadel_beyond/#ixzz0piNOhqaA
You’ll see that it says FOR THROUGHPUT AND EFFICIENCY, not “stack this at the expense of all other stats because +spellpower is really a code name for +win”.
If you are never going OOM in fights even when things go wrong, you’ve gotten your GCD to 1 second with BT and raid buffs, I agree it’s definitely time to stack spellpower.
Ugh.

Like i said. The fail 4k dps raid was a rep run that was pugged. And you are an idiot for both not knowing how to read as shown repeatedly and for the fact that everyone that’s replied to you has disagreed with what you’ve had to say. So you go ahead and pretend you know best. Ain’t our comments that are getting blocked out. Anyone can say simply “We am da best” and leave it at that. I’ve seen plenty of level 30′s do it.

As a Disc Priest who has 11/12 on 25m H ICC I dont know what this guy is talking about…. I am the Guilds main tank healer and we use a Pally as a back up on the 2 off tanks. Now it maybe because I have mostly 277 gear but I always spam Flash Heal over Greater Heal because of the amount of mana it uses & and with an average of 18k every sec I out heal 99% of most Holy Pally’s
In ICC 10 runs and other 10/25 runs (Non ICC) Prayer of Healing is Great to Cover a few tanks Especially if you are in the same group as a Shammy for mana regen as well.

i’ve played 2 disc priests at 80…1 is gearing ..other is ICC geared and also heal as a pally in ICC10. IMHO a disc should stack int until they break 30k raid buffed..then as gear gets replaced swap int gems for sp gems…any mana pool over 26k roughly means you are getting more mana back from rapture then the pw:s cost to cast…so 30k is comfortable..beyond that sp just makes your shields even better.
A holy pally that is holy specced stacks int because they spam holy light…working off beacons and glyphs and wisdom seals its about huge over heal and solid mana returns..A flash Specced pally stacks sp and is glyphed seal of light over wisdom…this is actually very fun and viable in current ICC with the raid buff….idea there is speed with hard fast heals..shock,flash,flash spam..allows alot more mobility then the holy roller.

If i’m not mistaken holy pallies get 20% of their int into SP. That’s y they stack so much of it, and w/o a meditation type of talent the don’t regen nearly as quickly as a disc. 1 more small thing, disc priest actually get 15% additional int from talents compaired to the pallies 10%. (just thought i’d throw that out there

@ What: Your comment and the one following yours were the only two “retarded” things I saw on this page. Look up “retarded” in a dictionary and you’ll see what I mean(I hope).
There are some statistical minimums you should be shooting for as a disc priest.
26640 mana buffed. This is the point at which rapture returns equal the mana cost of PW:S.
25% – 30% holy critical strike chance buffed. This will give you decent Divine Aegis uptime. More isn’t useless, but not as useful as other stats.
As much spellpower as you can get.
5% haste from gear if you’ll be raiding with optimal group composition. This is going to work with Borrowed Time to lower your GCD down to nearly 1 second. More doesn’t hurt. Faster heals can save someone’s life, and that’s why they brought you in the first place, right?
250 mp5 I5SR/IFSR. That’s 250 mana per 5 seconds WHILE CASTING for those not familiar with the term I5SR/IFSR. As the OP said, disc pretty much chain casts the entire time, so you won’t spend much time O5SR/OFSR.
Much of what I’ve posted here can be found on various sites with better theorycrafters than I. Elitist Jerks has a pretty good discussion about discipline priests too.
Discipline suffers from one minor issue: sustained throughput. We just don’t have it. We’re not powerless, but our throughput suffers after we PW:S -> hasted penance -> FHeal/GHeal. We’re pretty impotent until our next penance when single target nuke healing.
Due to the sustained throughput issue I mentioned above, a holy pally is still going to be the preferred tank healer. That doesn’t mean Discipline can’t do it, but it’s not what we’re best at.
What are we best at? Helping groups learn fights. We can cover up holes in the raid’s execution of an encounter. PW:S might mean a DPS or tank lives to keep learning the fight. That’s a win for everyone involved.
SHIELD ON, DISC PRIESTS!
- Crevarius of Zangarmarsh(formerly of Bronzebeard)
P.s. I know some people will disagree with some of what I’ve said. Please keep one thing in mind when replying. I love my discipline priest. It’s an amazing class/spec to play and IMO far more fun than holy ever was. I don’t usually top healing meters(it does happen sometimes and I don’t use guessed absorbs), but of all the healers in my raids, I am *always* lowest on overheal. When you consider “effective healing” discipline is top shelf.

If your new to Disc, you may be new to healing as well so find a good healing add-on like Healbot or Grid and maybe Decursive.
In 10 mans, even when your spamming PW:S on the raid or tank healing you still have time to throw out raid heals. I look at my role as being the redeemer – yes you are helping with raid healing, but be especially on the lookout for members of the group who are near death. The Disc priest has fabalous tools to keep those people alive in any number of ways while the druid’s HoTs go to work. Recasting Prayer of Mending, PW:Shield, Pain Supression, Penance, a hasted Flash or even Divine Hymn itself would all provide that very fast single person heal boost to get the raid member up to enough health that the other raid healers can top them off. In short, for many fights I work on the extreme edges of healing, I mitigate damage and I pull out the stops for the near dead. Its simply a mindset on what your role will be.

“The first sentence pretty much destroyed any credibility the article might have had.”
I strongly disagree.
The discipline priest is a very key part of a 25 man raid, for the purpose of raid healing. Although a Disc priest CAN tank heal, it doesn’t mean they should, or that they are the best option. However they are AMAZING tank healing back-up to a Paladin, with the addition of being a key part of raid mitigation, but the fact is as the sole tank healer, they can’t cut it alone. They are much more adept at “helping” (healing or shielding) many members at once then trying to keep up with tank damage spamming FH and GH (especially without the serendipity talent from the holy tree), and Penance is such an effective raid healing tool that it should not be kept primarily to tanks.
Please keep in mind this is from a H 25 man point of view, where one tank healer is NEVER enough, and all healers in the raid contribute equally to every aspect of healing. A Disc priest is capable of solo tank healing in a 10 man, but so is a well geared Druid, OR Holy Priest, OR Shaman.
P.S. Int is quite useful, read talents ^.^

I play a disc priest in a 11/12 heroic guild
(doesn’t mean much this late in icecrown I guess but w/e)
I just don’t see what all the flaming is for, it’s true that if you need more longevity, gem intel and it will go up quite a bit…
with that said, I’ve had bad luck with drops and my gear isn’t great only a couple 277 pieces and mostly 264 (and one 245) and I never go oom with sfiend on cd, especially if I hymn before sending the bugger out.
and I only have one solace (other trinket is gunship)
So I don’t know, might want to make sure you’re handling your sfiend better if you’re going oom.
and honestly, ooming isn’t a huge deal, I don’t know about most guilds but we always raid with plenty of druids grab an innervate, or put yourself in a resto shaman’s group, make sure your replenishment uptime is close to 100% and I don’t see a disc priest going oom unless they’re really undergeared or doing something wrong.

To What. It was a reputation run, not my people. And yes, the article writer said they were not tank healers. Please learn to read the actual article before replying to the first thought-out comment you see. And I’d recommend you actually play a Disc Priest before you say stacking a stat is retarded that gets a 15% bonus to it via talents. If somebody wants to do it, I’d much rather have a healer that will guarantee a lack of OOM situations.
And to Redwood: Yes, their DPS was very sad. I laughed quite a lot. I never said you NEEDED to gather Int, I said that it * doesn’t hurt*, just that the more you have the more you get back, and in fact our usual disc priest runs out in fights fairly often. Might be part of how she’s gemmed but I don’t really feel like checking. But by all means, explain to me how a holy paladin should need to gem Int when a Disc Priest doesn’t and they get the same intellect bonus via talents? I’m pretty sure the 14 yes votes thus far as opposed to the 6 no (two of which are likely from you two) says that if I’m not exactly right then I’m not far off the mark. A good Discipline Priest goes the extra mile to make sure nothing becomes a problem in the first place before it can.

Not a tank healer? I’ve never had a problem both being a tank healer AND keeping shields up on the raid. In fact I’ve had to solo-heal a part of ICC before in 10 man, on the trash leading to Marrowgar, with a group of people who never saw a soul break 4k DPS, or even 3500 most of the time. May not sound impressive to you but you really should try it sometime. It’s annoying and it makes you stay on your toes. Although shields can easily account for 10k, for the record. Especially if you go all-out for spellpower.
As a Disc priest, your top three heals should NEVER have Renew or Greater Heal even close in there. Renew is a filler if it’s used at all and GHeal is just a no. Don’t use it. Penance is awesome for a tank when their shield drops and a few hits come in, Prayer of Mending needs no introduction and in fact Prayer of Healing can be quite useful if the druid or shaman is slacking. Don’t be afraid to pop that spell if the raid needs it. “I’m not a raid healer” doesn’t really help much if bad luck hits the raid healer and you could have made the difference. I’ve actually kept even as a Disc priest with both druids and shamans before. I don’t know if that says a lot about me or not a lot about them, but anyway.
It doesn’t hurt to have a few gems be for Intellect, even pure Int. Rapture and the Shadowfiend restore mana based on how much of a pool you have, so the more you have the more you get back. If you find yourself having to pick it up for a bad raid healer, or even BE the raid healer, getting more back per replenishment of any kind is NOT a bad thing at all. Just prepare in that worst case scenario to *Really* be on your toes. And then find a new raid healer. Heh.
