Being a Disc Priest myself, I can say quite happily that I can in fact tank heal in the 'lower' level 80 raids (10 man Naxx, OS, etc). I am still getting geared, with 20k Mana. While I have found that main tank healing in a raid is difficult, it's not impossible. It simply calls for a priest to know what they're doing, and when to do it, and for them to be flexible in what abilities they use. One Naxx run even had me healing all three tanks at once, because the Paladin healer was throwing a hissy fit over something and refused to heal. It was a great success, with a couple close calls.

Even with my 'low' mana, I tend to not go oom, due to keeping Shadowfiend on CD when needed, Hymns, etc. I tend to gear my disc priest the exact same way I would my Warlock. SP/Int/Stam/Crit, with Haste, Spirit, and MP5 thrown in when I notice a change is needed.

I don't pretend to know elitist mumbo-jumbo, nor do I pretend I know what I'm doing. This is simply what works for me, and my personal style of play. Everyone plays different, and everyone has different preferred stats, etc. Some call for 'MOAR SP~!' or 'MOAR MP5!', I just prefer to play for fun, and fun for me is getting 10k Healing crits. I readily admit that I'm not the best healer, but it's what I'm happy with. I never top the healing charts, but healing isn't a race; it's keeping your team-mates alive long enough to get the loot.

The point of this? Very basically, you can't tell people how to spec or stack their own toons. Blizzard made the talent trees and stats customizable for a reason. It simply depends on what the player prefers to get out of their character's roles. While a healer can't heal with AP and Str gear; within the Caster stats I've tended to notice it doesn't really matter how you stack your stats, so long as you know how to play your toon with those chosen stats.

@ What:
Stop. Just stop. How many more posts do you need downranked into oblivion before you realize people don't like to be insulted? People disagree with you. Get over it. There's no reason to start calling them names. It actually undermines your position.

@ jhudas:
Thank you for reinforcing what I've been saying all along. This discussion wasn't limited to endgame, and given that it's a disc guide for beginners, I'd say it's targeted squarely in the opposite direction.

There is no single "this is the right way to gem" argument that holds water. It all depends on your gear, something the "SP or nothing" posters seem to have forgotten.

no where in here does it say end game or hard raiding content..as i stated earlier the only time a disc should stack int. is when gearing up... anything under 27k'ish mana you arent getting enough returns for your rapture..go int' until you have around 28-30..that includes int/stats flasks..carry int scrolls(case your mageless)..anything that can get a int buff..then go spellpower(food)..otherwise you will oom alot..as you farm emblems and aquire gear that carries you into that comfortable mana pool...then anything you can put spellpower on..you should.

so recap....if your raiding ..you should know this but..spellpower is the ultimate pve enhancement..only breaking from that to meet +7/8 spellpower gem bonuses and..odds are you have ember skyflare which needs 3 reds(surprise..thats all sp).

a fresh 80 will have crap blues and be mana starved for a while...gather int until you are comfortable then as gear gets replaced...replace with sp red gems
